It was weaning day!
We had plans to go to my Kindergarten teacher's birthday party that afternoon, so we started out early.
So I would like to wish Mrs. Rials a very Happy Birthday and I'm so sorry we were unable to make it.
Everything was going well.
As each calf went through the chute, we were able to weigh them, deworm them, and protect them against blackleg, and place ear tags in their ears if needed.
When we get near the end, we are always very tired and ready to be done.
Unfortunately, the very last calf had a very different idea.
He didn't want to go through the chute, so he pushed himself through a small crack instead.
His head and shoulders went through, but his rear end did not fit. And then he could not back up because his shoulders were past the opening.
"What in the world!" was certainly said, but in a much more colorful way as you can imagine.
The only thing left to do was to get a ratchet and disassemble the chute. The chute was painted by the manufacturer after assembly, making it very hard to turn. Tim's arms were so tired.
It was intense. Thankfully Tim and the steer are both ok, and we were able to put the chute back together and haul all of the weaned calves to the "Pietsch Place" in Warda, where they will stay until they are ready to come back home to the feed pen.
As we ponder the what-if's of the day, we are so thankful that it turned out so well.
This is all part of what goes into raising cattle. There's ALWAYS that one!!! I'm sad we missed the birthday party, but so thankful we have a good story to tell.
