Each year, we take our five grandchildren on a birthday trip. This year, we stayed close to home at a charming treasure in Winchester, Texas, called The Lodge on Lake Siesta. Formerly a restaurant known as "Pinewood Inn," this location holds special memories for Tim and me—it was once a restaurant where we went on dates. Walking through the lodge, we smiled at the sight of the original booths and felt the nostalgia seeing them. The decor feels like a fun faraway retreat. One of our grandchildren even asked if there were bears in the woods, sending us into a bit of laughter.
The Magic of The Lodge on Lake Siesta
Lake Siesta is just a stone's throw from the lodge, down a gentle slope. It offers a picturesque setting for our family adventures. The lodge provides several fun equipment options, including a Jon Boat and kayaks for paddling around the lake. Our grandchildren loved seeing the ducks that paddled up to the boats, eagerly begging for food.
Each evening, the lodge transformed into a wildlife observation post as raccoons started to appear near the feeders close to our windows. It was a treat to witness their antics up close. The spacious lodge can accommodate 20 or more guests, making it the perfect place for family gatherings. Our grandchildren invented endless games of hide-and-seek, utilizing the various nooks and crannies to hide away from one another. They also played cards and other games.

A Morning to Remember
We began our mornings with breakfast on the screened-in patio, soaking in the soothing sounds of a nearby waterfall. The gentle sound of water cascading over rocks created a peaceful, serene atmosphere that was the best way to kick off our busy days. Eating outside has a unique charm that makes food taste even better, and with the warm Texan sun shining down, we felt relaxed and content.

Critters - Even at the Trampoline Park
After a hearty breakfast, we decided to embark on an adventure to a trampoline park. The excitement was already amazing because they love trampoline parks, climbing rock walls and zip lining around the indoor park. But then we encountered a group of "Furries"—teenage enthusiasts dressed as animals complete with tails and masks. They were fascinating to observe, practicing hopping like the animal they were dressed like. One who was dressed like a cat hissed at our older grandsons. Our youngest grandson humorously noted, "The sign says NO ANIMALS ALLOWED." It was moments like these that offer an unexpected burst of laughter. "Out of the mouths of babes."
An Evening of Culinary Delights
After the trampoline park, our children were eager to return to the lodge, but first, we made a pit stop at a large HEB in Bastrop. Shopping at HEB is always a fun experience (I don't like grocery shopping), but having five grandchildren along made me feel like my ducks (grandchildren) were all in a row. Everyone found something they were hungry for—from sushi , pot stickers, chicken nuggets and spicy green salsa with chips.
The total bill for our family feast came to $154, which we all agreed was probably comparable to dining out. We even picked out personal birthday cheesecakes for everyone, making the evening feel extra special. Back at the lodge, we gathered around the long dining table, sang Happy Birthday, shared stories, and enjoyed the delicious meal while the sun began to set over Lake Siesta.

Creating Unforgettable Memories
Bob and Nancy Styles have done an incredible job creating a retreat at The Lodge on Lake Siesta. The inviting atmosphere allows families to connect and create beautiful memories together. While the lodge offers many amenities, what truly makes the experience special is the quality time spent with loved ones.
Every moment—from laughter-filled games to quiet conversations on the porch—has brought us closer, immersing ourselves in nature, and enjoying one another's company.
As our trip came to an end, we reflected on all the laughter and fun we shared this year. Each year strengthens the bond we have as a family, allowing us to create stories that we will recount over the years.
A Treasure Hidden in Winchester
If you are looking for a family getaway that embodies relaxation and fun, I wholeheartedly recommend The Lodge on Lake Siesta. Whether you are fishing, kayaking, or just enjoying the tranquility on the screened-in porch, this retreat offers something for everyone. Its proximity to home makes it easy to access, but it feels like you have traveled to a different world, far away from everyday routines.
This experience reminded us that sometimes the best adventures are the ones that are close to home. The Lodge on Lake Siesta is a place filled with love, laughter, and unforgettable memories.
In summary, if you are looking to create lasting family memories in a welcoming environment, consider staying at The Lodge on Lake Siesta. With its beautiful scenery, numerous activities, and the chance to bond with loved ones, you are sure to walk away with a heart full of joy.
As we look forward to next year’s birthday trip, we will fondly remember the vibrant moments we shared at the lodge. Our hearts are full, and we can’t wait to explore new adventures together in the years to come.
